 百事前CEO瑞尼蒙德谈领导力:一个真正的领袖,不仅需要有丰富的经验和一双实干的手,还要有一颗同情心。

“Now is a tremendous time to build a career,” Steve Reinemund, former chairman and CEO of PepsiCo, told members of the student-led Christian Business Student Association. Speaking on February 13 at the Harper Center, Reinemund said the advantage today is that business doesn’t face the limitations of the government or of non-governmental organizations (NGOs).

But business leaders do face tremendous challenges, and Reinemund said the way to navigate them is by using your head, heart and hands. He said the authentic leader has an experienced head; a compassionate, thoughtful heart and committed hands. “Everyone is stronger in some areas than others,” he said. “We can’t aspire to be the greatest at all three. The question is, how do you match your talents to the demands of the job?”

One way to meet the demands of the job, Reinemund said is what Barack Obama suggests - that one can learn from listening to the experiences of others.

To second-year student, Roger Whitenhill, Obama’s statement makes a lot of sense, and he appreciated how Reinemund related it to business. “I liked what he said about listening,” Whitenhall said, “and longevity and loyalty as important things to keep in mind. If we can work on those, we will be better leaders.”

Reinemund said leaders must also stay focused, despite conflicts that can be distracting, and must remember the long view. “When you graduate, you have the highest level of energy ever,” he said. “You’ll have the fewest obligations and commitments. Life will seem pretty simple. But if you go out at 150 percent without recognizing that life is a marathon, you’ll have trouble. One major problem is running out of gas. Another is losing the moral compass.”
